If I hadn't had any background on the pairing before going into that movie I definitely wouldn't have come out with the slightest thought in my head about shipping Steve/Tony which was strange for me because they're in my top five OTP's.

Well, their initial relationship is very different in the movie than it was in the comics, so honestly I think it shows intelligence and perceptiveness on your part that you could separate their comic versions from their film versions, and feel differently about them in the movie instead of trying to make them conform to their comiscverse characterizations in your head and ship them just because they're Steve and Tony.

Seems to me you ship characters because of their personalities nature of their dynamic, not because of a knee-jerk "I shipped them in another adaptation therefore they must be soulmates in all versions and universes!", and IMO that's a really good approach, and one that fandom could use a lot more of.
