"Retarded" was a word I had to work really hard at getting rid of in my vocab. I'm from Massachusetts, and that word is all over the friggin' place here. I didn't even notice how often I was using it until a friend pointed it out. Ugh.

You really shouldn't focus on it or beat yourself up too much. You were (presumably) young and add to that that a lot of people (in America, at least) are taught to listen to teachers because they know all. We're not taught to question or argue with them, so it's a learning process.

I'm also a believer that intent matters a lot. You didn't go out wearing "blackface" with the intent to be a racist jerk. You were in a make-up class, you were oblivious, you had no malicious intent at all. I mean, obvs there's more to it but I really don't think you did anything too awful.

To be honest, I doubt anyone would really care much about something you did one time back in the 90's that might not have been completely appropriate. It was a mistake. They happen. It kind of feels like you're trying to win brownie points or something by posting about it here.

There are lots of SJW's here but it's far from the only place they hang out, or the most concentrated one. There are also lots of people who are not SJW's but who care deeply about SJ issues here (and other places as well).
