I've never gotten the elitist mindset in some fandoms. I just want to squee with people that love the characters I love.

Specifically with comics (at least Marvel, I don't read DC so I can't say one way or the other) we are (or should be) used to multiple universes, multiple versions of the same character, multiple kinds of outcomes. So the movie-verse is just one more version of how things could go. If that's the one you like, awesome! I love it too! That doesn't mean I don't love the 616 (main universe) any less. It's just a different take.

The problems come in from BOTH SIDES of this when anyone thinks they automatically know which way is RIGHT BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT! No. There are different takes and yeah, maybe you've loved Iron Man in the comics since Demon in a Bottle and you've read everything. That doesn't give you the right to rain on a newer fan's parade (no matter how they fell in love with the character). Same goes for movie fans though. Saying you know absolutely everything about Loki from two films to someone who's been reading the comics for decades... well, that's coming to come of as confrontational.

Basically, I agree. Most people in the Marvel fandom are awesome and just want to talk about the stuff they love. :D

^ a lot of the cinematic universe BNF fanfic authors are like this, and it really bugs me. It's totally awesome if you don't want to read the comics and only like the movies! But don't arrogantly act like you know everything about the character and their history if you haven't read the source material...when they act as if the source material doesn't exist or has no value, I get just a bit frustrated.

Me too, anon. God, me too. I had someone tear a strip and a half off me for referencing Hawkeye's comics origins in a fic. A comic canon based fic, mind you. Labelled as such. I simply linked them to Wiki and moved on but... ugh.

Respect is a two way street. That's something everyone needs to keep in mind.

This, but it's also worth noting that the movies and comics are pretty totally different and so are the characters in them, sometimes irreconcilably so. I think a movie fan going into the comics wanting to learn about character XYZ would end up being pretty surprised. Basically, the character the newer fan fell in love with is a different character.

In some cases, yes. In those cases, I'd point them toward the Ultimate Universe. A lot of the movie stuff that is so vastly different from the 616 has its basis there. From there, with there being more material and more informations on those fan loved characters in a fairly similar form, it can be an easier jump to the main continuity because more similarities become apparent.

Or you can just go the AU route and save some time. ;)

True! It would be much easier to ease slowly into Hideous Purple Hawkeye.

But my point is, I don't think any arguing between movie fans and comic fans about characters could be all that productive when they are officially different universes whose continuities don't really apply to each other except in the sense that the comics obviously inform what happens in the movies. In that sense, a lifelong comics fan doesn't know more about the movie characters than someone who has only seen the movies, because all there is to know about the movie characters is what happens/will happen/is said or hinted to have happened in the movies.

Oh, I agree. That's where the problem comes in though. People have a tendency to think they DO know better than anyone else (even not taking comics vs. movies out of the equation, there are always people like this} even if they don't. It basically boils down to (on both sides) respecting other takes. It's really that simple coming from either the movies or the comics.

Also, they changed 616!Hawkeye's costume to something more "movie compliant" recently. Black leather, same idea, but purple instead of maroon. [shrugs] They both feed into each other, I guess.
