It's sort of related to my all time least favorite fictional relationship problem, which is the sort where everything would be resolved if they'd just ADMIT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM AND TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT IT. To be fair

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 04:23 am (UTC)(link)It's so overdone that it feels like a cheap excuse to introduce needless conflict or prolong the plot because they ran out of ideas.
Lately, I've taken to stop seeing films, shows, etc. that use it, and I don't regret it.
I vaguely remember seeing it done well a few times, but I can't even remember where or when. That should probably say enough about how often it's done badly.
It's also specially jarring when the characters would normally talk things out and they suddenly don't for that episode or book or whatever, and no explanation for their change in behavior is ever given. Like, they've been preoccupied with something else, or got into a nasty "not-talking-to-you" fight, or I don't know, something that makes sense for them.
