Some of the canon details are different, yes, but at the heart of it (for most of them) we're looking at a closer representation of these characters. True, a few of them are fed directly from the Ultimates line (Nick Fury, Clint Barton) but those takes are pretty damn close to their source material. Movie-verse Tony is VERY close to comics-verse Tony for example. It seems that Joss Whedon made it his goal to work as many 616 references to Natasha's back story in as possible. Cap, while definitely more the rougher soldier from the Ultimates, is at his core very similar to Steve Rogers in the 616. On and on and on. Which is why they appeal not only to new fans but those died in the wool nerds like me. ;)
Also, just because someone starts off with the movies, doesn't mean they won't branch out. They don't have to, by any means, but that doesn't mean they won't ever want to pick up, say, Invincible Iron Man because they really like IM and IM2.
I think the conversation can be an interesting one on both sides IF (and yes, I know it's a big IF) everybody's willing to listen to the different takes.
