Don't worry - thankfully, there is almost no romance in the movie. While she is the only female on the team (and admittedly one of the only women in the movie - there are several other women, but none of them get much screen time), she isn't just a "token female" - she is very much an Avenger and a character in her own right, and she is treated as a superhero, not a female superhero.

(As an added bonus, while the other main ladies of the movie, Pepper and Maria Hill, don't get much screentime, what they do have is very good - it's pretty heavily implied that Pepper, if not CEO [though I like to think she is], has definitely moved up and beyond just being Tony's PA-come-LI, and Maria is shown as being a pretty competent agent, manager, and bodyguard).

I assumed Pepper was CEO (and all fanon seems to think the same so I'm certain my assumption was right, unless they change something in IM3). And I was totally impressed with Hill's epic car chase where she was stubbornly trying to take out Loki and Hawkeye all the way through the base and only quit when they dropped the whole frickin' tunnel on her head and took out her truck's engine. It's not just a female character thing either -- usually for those kinds of scene a whole pack of mooks swarm out and get smacked down like redshirts after a few seconds, but noooo, she spent a good three minutes trying to mow them down singlehandedly like a boss. :D

It's often the little things that get me. I think it's harder to make minor female characters awesome in little ways than it is to craft a brilliantly-written female main character.

Agreed! When I first saw the movie, I saw that scene and was like, 'NOOOOO, BUT SHE'S AWESOME, I LIKE HER, I DON'T WANT HER TO DIE!' I was SO happy she made it to the end and kept being badass!
