Get over yourself. Natasha is awesome, full stop, and anyone who comes out of that movie thinking she was just the "token female" or just stood around looking pretty was not paying attention.

Go see it without fear! There was no romance at all! It was extremely refreshing.

She's nowhere near the token love interest. There's a little bit of subtext between her and Hawkeye, that's it.

I don't blame you for being suspicious, though, and I don't think it's on account of any misogyny on your part. I simply think that lazy writing when it comes to female characters has often been so incredibly lazy that we (the viewers) have started to expect to be disappointed in advance.

I really thought she was great in this film.

You'll be happy for the lack of romance. Anyway you should watch it, BW was my definitely my favorite character in that movie.

She's one of the only ones in the group with a love interest (sort of; it's complicated) that garners something more than a passing reference, but to me she cares more about getting the job done and coming out on the winning side than romance. I will say, however, that is most definitely a critical member of the team and not merely eye candy nor the token female. Just watch the film. You'll see.

Just chiming in with another "seriously, it's fine." Even if you do interpret her relationship with Hawkeye as romantic (and it's seriously easy not to do so -- plenty of people see the relationship as brothers-n-arms), if anything he would be HER love interest in terms of the way the narrative is positioned and their relative importance in it.

But mostly there just isn't romance (at least not with Natasha -- there is a little Tony/Pepper in there, but that has two movies worth of back story) and also she is awesome and has lots of neat stuff to do and is definitely not the token female.

i was kind of disappointed that there wasn't any romance stuff with her, actually. i thought both her and hawk dude's characters were so boring that they could have really benefited from more romantic tension between them. might have been the actors, though. scarjo is always terrible imo.

If there's anyone you could maybe feel that way about, it's Pepper, not Natasha.

I was worried for similar things, and if you're like me you'll be disappointed in the best way. :)

She was one of my favorites in the movie and if anything she's the one rescuing the damsel in distress.

She's not even remotely a love interest. She's very close to one of the guys, but it comes across as a lot more bromantic/friendship than romance or sex. It's actually epic because as much as I love slash bromance, I LOVED seeing a man and a woman having an epic bromance without even the tiniest hint of romantic love between them.

As people have said there is no romantic subplot in this movie. There's no space for a romantic subplot. The only part that is potentially non-gen is a blink and you'll miss it moment between Tony and Pepper. All the characters have cute non-romantic interaction with each other, but unless your slash/het goggles are on pretty firmly, there aren't even any dubiously shippy moments.

Uh so the guys get to be "superheroes" while she's the "token female character" who you are going to "pass serious judgment on" if the plot includes her personal life. Nice. She's just another superhero OP, I don't really know where you're coming from with this...

I'm guessing you haven't seen the other movies? She's in Iron Man 2 and so actually has more character development than other superheroes. I found her a difficult character to like but, while she is involved in a mini-romance arc, she certainly holds her own as a superhero.

Watch it. She's one of the best, most worthwhile characters. She's not just a token love interest - even if one does interpret her relationship with Hawkeye as romantic, if anything he's the token love interest.

Seriously, Captain America is a lot less interesting than she is. Black Widow is amazing in this movie.

The only thing you'll worry about after leaving the film is what happened in Budapest and where the fics are.

Black Widow was VERY much not the token female member. She was both very important to the plot of the movie, and her backstory and personality was very important and unique in a storytelling sense. She totally added to both the actual in-universe events, and to the movie as a whole, in ways that had nothing to do with being the lone woman. The movie would be substantially different without her.

And she was definitely not a love interest. There are some possibilities of UST between her and Hawkeye, but if anything he's her love interest rather than the other way around, since most of what he does for the first 3/4 of the movie happens in order for him to serve as one of her character's motivations, etc, the way female love interests usually give male protagonists motivation.

Don't worry - thankfully, there is almost no romance in the movie. While she is the only female on the team (and admittedly one of the only women in the movie - there are several other women, but none of them get much screen time), she isn't just a "token female" - she is very much an Avenger and a character in her own right, and she is treated as a superhero, not a female superhero.

(As an added bonus, while the other main ladies of the movie, Pepper and Maria Hill, don't get much screentime, what they do have is very good - it's pretty heavily implied that Pepper, if not CEO [though I like to think she is], has definitely moved up and beyond just being Tony's PA-come-LI, and Maria is shown as being a pretty competent agent, manager, and bodyguard).

I don't think it's misogynistic at all to want a movie in which the token female character doesn't get in the way of the plot by ending up being just another love interest.
