Man, back when I was in high school, phones were banned on the grounds that having one meant you might be dealing drugs.

Maybe, but back then it was very rare for teenagers to have cell phones so it's not like the ban actually affected very many people, and since we still weren't yet living in a world where having a phone was expected, there were few legitimate reasons for a teenager to have a phone in school (unless maybe it was turned off until after school was over).
