Why the hell do you have a contacts list made up of about 150 people from the internet? Why are you guys talking on the phone and giving out personal information? That's just unsafe and weird. I could see someone having a few people on their contacts list that they'd been talking to online for a while and maybe intend to meet someday, but 150 randoms? That's more than a little weird on your part.

I figure OP is just storing their email and IM addresses and maybe URLs on her phone for ease of fandom chatting. International dialling from a cellphone would just be dumb.

My phone puts all my Facebook and IM connections in my contacts. Doesn't mean any of them have actually shared their personal information *shrug*

Aw, when I'm away from my netbook I sometimes send SMS-emails to my fandom bff who lives in a different country. It's good to be able to squee from anywhere.

NGL, I'm a little worried for you, anon. A high-schooler with that many international friends who have your phone number? Like, I've been in fandom for years(all through high school), and even my closest fandom friend doesn't have my phone number(admittedly, I don't talk on phones/text and I can't afford international rates).
At least you have friends, that's cool, but...are your parents cool with it? I'm assuming they pay the bills for the international calls?

If that's not what you meant (i.e. you use your phone as a way to store info/you have an internet-capable smartphone), then I understand a bit better.

I assume they keep the majority of their friends IM names/email addresses and the like on their phone. If they had actually given that many people their number...uhhhhh...bit not good.

I can't speak for OP, but, seriously? at that age? Late-night calls to a few fandom friends from other countries (using cheap calling cards) was a LOT healthier than the kinds of kicks I got IRL before I got into fandom. The older people you meet online don't grope you and if they get annoying you can block them without starting drama. You don't get into physical fights with your online friends. You can't share drugs with them.

WTF @ your scaremongering. The internet is a pretty damn safe place to hang out and learn about sex, love and growing up compared to the real world.

Dude, chill. I expressed concern for the OP. I know firsthand that fandom can be a great place and a very nice alternative to RL situations.

Yeah, it can be healthier than the alternatives, but if you're in fandom, I'd assume that you're not super likely to put yourself in situations where the alternatives occur(yes, they can happen at any time, but you're not likely to engage in risky behavior if you're not socially active in a traditional way; that's how it's been for me and my friends). Fandom/the internet is a great testing ground, but when fandom bleeds into RL, with calls and IRL meetings(which seem like a logical next step, and the OP did mention that she hadn't met all of them, suggesting she has met some), you CAN have to deal with that stuff, and it CAN be dangerous.

So just chill. I wasn't attacking the OP; I was just offering an opinion and expressing concern for someone who struck me as being in a similar place as when I was at his/her age.

Wow. The only way my contacts would be even near that was if it counted everyone I follow on twitter. (Which is actually what my phone does! I leave it just because it's hilarious to see Chris Evan's picture in my contacts list.)

Yeah...My smartphone for work integrates all of my "contacts" from my email, twitter, Facebook and phone numbers into one big list that is over 1k. So if the name matches for multiple accounts, it will go under one contact. But sometimes, I only have an email address, or like you, I follow Chris Evans. Over half that 1k are contacts for work. The rest are personal, or people I follow on Twitter.

Sometimes I'll look at the meager amount of phone numbers stored on my phone, so I'll switch my contact view to include everything with an email address (android + syncing with gmail contacts). Just to give me, or the person peeking over my shoulder, the illusion of super, international, popularity.

Which is rather ridic since good grief do I hate talking on the thing, much less wishing I had people to talk to on it. Eurgh.

Me too honestly. Even if there's nothing wrong with not having lots of friends or just not giving your personal info out to a bunch of people, I imagine it'd feel shameful...
