Age ain't but a number! Who cares if it's mature or not if you enjoy it? I'm sure there are older people than you out there who enjoy Glee too (or similar things you might not think age-appropriate). *shrugs*

I'm not much of a Glee fan, but as another 30-something, I feel the need to point out that it's not like there are a lot of compelling stories being told about people our age. If you don't like sitcoms or melodrama (which I don't), you're pretty much SOL for media that revolves around people in their 30's.

In any case, I don't really think there's anything wrong with liking stories about people who aren't the same age as you are. Hell, one of my favorite TV shows growing up was The Golden Girls.

as another 30-something, I feel the need to point out that it's not like there are a lot of compelling stories being told about people our age.

Wait, whaaaaaaat? Aren't most of the biggest fandom-popular TV shows past and present largely about people in their 30s or thereabouts? Supernatural, Sherlock, Game of Thrones, Fringe, White Collar, Firefly, BSG, House, all the Star Treks, all the Stargates, X-Files, due South, etc. are all full of 30something characters.

As someone just barely out of her 30s, I'm not seeing this lack of compelling stories about people in our age group. At all.

Since those fictional teens are in reality closer to your age then the high schoolers they play on the show I wouldn't worry about it.

Ahahahahahhhaahhaa. True. It's the Daniel Laruso effect.

I feel like the plots and acting and direction Glee has taken have gotten so it feels like a younger show, if that makes sense. I watch this with my mother, and this past year we've said several times that it just feels like the show has matured backwards and it now feels like a show just too young for us.

I haven't been keeping up with this myself, but I do recall an older friend of mine mentioning it to me once because her 30-something daughter had rec'd it to her. I'd say you shouldn't let age be a factor in your enjoyment. It has a good premise, a lot of musical talent and it's fun to watch - that's all you really need. :)

OP, don't worry about being too ~mature~ for Glee. If it entertains you, if it makes you think and laugh and cry, go for it! If the fandom discussions are good, who cares?

I heard somewhere that a good way to tell that you're old is that all your favourite actors are dying or dead of age.

Fuck that. All my favourite actors are babies and old people. I'm never going to feel old. WOO ETERNAL YOUTH WOOOO.

Thanks for making me feel so old at 38 and shipping all sorts of couples.

Age is just a number on a document.

I know people twice your age that love Glee. It's not a big deal.

One's never to old for fandom. As long as you're not creeping on younger ones, you should have fun!

Shit, that show makes me feel old, and I'm 24. But then again, the characters are like 18 and the actors are like 30, so it just makes none of the sense.

Weird maybe by societal standards, but then again, so is being in fandom in the first place, and I don't give a fuck.

I say enjoy what you enjoy. Fuck people who think it's weird and fuck those who think it's ~uncool to enjoy Glee just because they think it's lousy (and I say this as someone who doesn't like it myself). And I think it's awesome that it's a thing you share with your boyfriend.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
As long as you're not in an RPF fandom and they're not underage in their countries, I don't think it's too bad. It's when you're crushing on an underage boy and you're forty that things start to get disturbing.

I never get this logic.
When I was a kid, I didn't identify much with kids or later teenagers in novels or series. I cared more about the grown-up characters, provided that they were well written.
Which isn't always the case with the young characters you're supposed to relate to in "youth novels".
