I don't read inception fic, but I feel like that's writers just falling back on the fact that someone said it in the movie and considering we know so little about Arthur it just kind of stuck.

I personally love fics where they turn that on it's head so I'm going to go ahead and ask for recs OP.

(I also like Eames!isnotdumb)

Wait, Dumb!Eames is a thing? :(

Him misspelling and mispronouncing words or not knowing much about history/literature/geography etc. is definitely something I've seen in fandom a lot. Though I have also seen fics that addressed that and took it the other way. A lot more than really pimp out Arthur.

I agree. IMO Arthur does think outside the box and is creative; his biggest flaw in thinking process is, again this is just my opinion, not willing himself to dream bigger than necessary. As Eames so kindly put it, "mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling".
I think he purposely restricts himself, so as not to get too lost (as evidenced by his reactions to Mal and Cobb).

I agree...he weighed the options and decided what he lost in variety, he gained in stability. Which, in the long run, is probably more valuable in a dreaming landscape.

I've never seen Inception, but that kinda sucks. I'm creative AND I'm an analytical minded; one does not negate the existence of another, and just because you "lack creativity" doesn't mean you're not completely awesome in another area.

It's just a matter of there being limited characterization in canon, and people exaggerating the few small details there are, such as Eames saying Arthur lacks imagination and telling him to dream bigger. It can be annoying, but I don't think it's actually a critique of the character because I don't see it as being based that firmly in canon. I don't think Arthur does anything in the movie that suggests lack of creativity. He's one of the more analytical characters, and is more cautious and grounded in what he thinks is possible, but if he weren't creative, he wouldn't be able to pull off most of what he does.

I hear you, though. The fanon that annoys me the most is Eames being a terrible dresser. I liked Eames's clothes, and his style is the closest to mine in real life. So yeah, I hear you about taking it personally. :P

Exactly. It drives me crazy when people take a single moment or comment in canon and just won't let it go. I get that we don't have a lot to work with, but expand and build on ideas, don't just keep recycling the exact same thing over and over again. If I never see the word "paisley" again, it will be too soon.

I feel like Eames says at one point that he lacks creativity (or "has no imagination"?). But it feels like a bit of a set-up for us rooting for Arthur's creative solution to the no-gravity problem, so he's proven wrong by the end.

[personal profile] madmaudlin 2012-06-14 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
This. Eames liked to needle Arthur, there's nothing to say that he was right about Arthur's lack of creativity. A lack of creativity in dreamsharing seems a major limitation, one that could get you killed. Arthur seemed plenty creative to me.

I've watched the movie twice and I still can't see where Fandom has come up with all this about Arthur. He's pretty much a blank slate as far as his personality, his backstory, his ambitions and any talent that isn't explicitly shown in the film are concerned.

The only person in the that ever said Arthur had no imagination was Eames, and I think that's because Eames is a bitchy queen and likes to feed the silly rivalry he and Art have. Arthur may not have Eames's 'artistry' but he has creativity in that he can take a weird, crappy situation and work a solution out of it.

Eames is a bitchy queen

I want fic of this and if it's wrong I don't wanna be right.

Oh, but the truth of this, the absolute truth.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds suspiciously like those people who watched the Avengers and now go around saying that Steve's line about Tony not being sacrificial was right, when in fact the whole point was that he turned out to be wrong. I thought Arthur's solution to the no-gravity thing was kind of similar to that, debunking Eames' line about him having no creativity. Kinda like...he tends to seem uncreative because he doesn't dream big or whatever, but he actually is?

(Then again, I saw this movie only once a long time ago so I may be misremembering something).

This has already been said, but his dealing with the freefall/zero-gravity thing was plenty creative - he's just a more linear/neater thinker than the others.

Haha, yeah. I'm pretty sure what Arthur actually lacks is volatility, unlike everyone else he works with (and in a business like dream-sharing, that's probably a rare commodity).
