...You might want to sit down with yourself and figure out whether you should work on that if those are as dominant traits with you as they are with him OP.

Not sure I've ever heard anyone say they liked a character because they share their worst traits. Usually people hate characters for that reason. (I can see why it would be easier to relate to them, but...still.) Going against the grain, OP.

Er...good luck with that?

One of the reasons I love my main OC is that she lets loose with some of the flaws that I am too aware of not to keep in check. Sort of a liberating thing, I guess. However, my very flawed character is still a protagonist rather than a villain.

To me the secret makes it sound like the OP celebrates those flaws. Maybe they meant (like you) that it's liberating to see someone with similar flaws or that his flaws make him easier to relate to but...idk, that wasn't how I read it.

To me the secret makes it sound like the OP celebrates those flaws.

I didn't get that vibe. But of course, there's no way of knowing with the given information.

I like a character because I know I have better control over our mutual bad traits than they do.

Whenever I have a shitty day I'll watch an episode and think to myself, "at least you weren't that bad."

Ahhhh, okay, now that makes sense. Maybe that's what the OP meant then. (Unless you are the OP?)

I like that!

I personally adore characters that have my flaws. Not only is there a lot of, "I know that feel, bro" (especially since a lot of bad things that happen to characters tend to be character-driven, so shit happens to them and it's all their own fault) but it also kind of helps me understand myself to understand them, and in some cases, even see how they overcome those flaws.

I think people who hate characters who share their worst traits might be in denial about those traits in themselves, or at least ashamed and not like to think about them. I'm pretty open about my flaws. I know I have them, and I know they're ugly, but everyone's got flaws, and I don't mind looking at or talking about mine.

The overcoming thing makes a lot of sense, yea.

Idk, while I think there are certaintly people out there (a good many of them too) in denial about their flaws and that sometimes tend to hate characters that are similar to them, I think there's probably just as many who are aware of their own flaws, ashamed and disappointed in themselves because of them, and have a certain level of self loathing going on that gets transferred to the character. Especially if the character has better success on transcending their flaws than they do.

Who knows man...people are complicated.

I do think that people who adamantly hate any sort of thing have some kind of issue. Not just normal hate, but adamant hate.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-06-15 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have liked characters in the past that have had my worst traits. It did make it easier to relate, and it made me feel like less of a freak.

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-06-15 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well...obviously I don't know you, but I doubt you have any reason to feel like a freak. Everyone has faults; it's just human nature.

Is this one of those "No, guys! I really am a sociopath!" secrets? Congratulations, you sound like a terrible person. Do you also enjoy torturing small animals?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's cool or anything. I don't think I'm a sociopath either.

I don't know why, but I like exploring characters with horrible flaws like mine. In the same way some people like to look at how their virtues or even their flaws might be exacerbated in a superhero, I guess I just like to look at my flaws as they would be exacerbated in a villain.

Which is the main reason I hate how so much of fandom characterizes Loki.

Are you OP? And is that more of like, an intellectual thing - just something that's interesting? Honestly curious. I also like characters who share some of my flaws because I find them very relatable, but it's usually protagonists and not as extreme as Loki.

If you are OP: You seem to be very aware of your flaws; do you know your positive traits as well as those? Do you ever find characters you see that part of yourself in? Again, curious.

Venturing to say here, OP, that you might want to do some reflection and think about ways in which you can temper some of those flaws. Everyone has flaws, but if they get out of control they can really hurt other people, not to mention yourself. Things like "cruel" and "prone to lying" raise a pretty big red flag to me, and I really don't think it's okay to do things that you know are hurting people, probably badly. I think it's a good thing that you recognize them as flaws; I hope you are able to work on addressing them. And I hope you are also aware of the positive traits you have. I say all of this as someone who also has some pretty serious flaws that can lead to hurting other people. They are very different from yours (anger issues, tendency to get self-absorbed when emotional, etc.), but they're there. I have been working on them and have made significant improvement, even if it hasn't always been easy. I think it's the right thing to do, and has also helped me to be a more healthy and happy person.

Well, y'know, you haven't killed 80 people, right? So you're...doin' OK.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly get where you're coming from, OP. I like Loki as a character, but after I recognized my own worst personality traits in him when I saw Thor (oversensitive, twisting words and throwing them in someone's face, desperate for approval, self-absorption, and hints of a superiority complex,), I've been trying to change. I have no idea how well I'm doing, though.

Oddly enough, while Loki made me recognize what was wrong with me, it was Thor (who's a big, brash, stubborn oldest child with little-to-no indoor voice, like me) that made me realize I could change.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
wow i know who's this one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
...Really? Because it sounds like it could be literally thousands or millions of people in the world.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think I do too!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations: you are an asshole. Welcome to the club. We don't have T-shirts or anything, just sarcastic quips.

No no, you are mistaken! They are but a poor misunderstood woobie that just needs the love of a good friend/man/woman.
