Potential Spoiler Warnings - Very slight

That's one thing I really like about these books - Joff is a monster, he was raised that way (Presumably more by Cersei than Robert behind closed doors), but then later on you see Cersei's POV and wants and why she does the things she does, and Jaime rethinking his life - so many viewpoints! Who's good, who's bad?

I wonder - how did Tommen and Myrcella not end up this way, unless Cersei simply had the children but thought that only Joff would need to learn how to be ruthless and rule Westeros.

I think she focused on Joff because he was the eldest. When Tommen becomes king you can see her start to bully him toward being that way too. However, repeated mentions of the 'incident' with the cat/kittens do suggest Joffrey was bad on the inside all along, anyway...

Oh well I pretty much predicted this would happen anyway since it was obvious from the very beginning that eventually someone was going to kill Joffrey

I think Joff was likely a screwed-up kid even without having Cersei as a mother, and she just made him worse.

I think we see that Joff has a lot of Robert in him, too-- even if Robert didn't take much of an active role in raising Joffrey, a lot of his more violent impulses go back to Robert.

Exactly. It's not all Cersei's fault--not only did Robert sidestep an active part in Joffrey's moral education (because Robert shirks anything he finds difficult or unpleasant), he was a shitty role model for Joff, both as a person and as a king.

yeah!

reminder: robert might have been buddies with paragon of virtue ned in his younger days and i guess he was a good enough king that the realm didn't disintegrate into war and horror until after he died, but there are all kinds of hints from joffrey and cersei that in terms of his personal life in that period he was SUPER shitty and abusive to his family

(and the show makes it even more obvious, which is relevant to this secret, i guess, since it uses an image from it)
