Uh...this person has every single "right" to write whatever the hell they want. So what if you find it creepy. You think actors and celebreties don't find RPF or even Canon fic about them creepy?

Don't try to tell people what they have a "right" to do.

...They have a right to write it, sure - but the OP has a right to be creeped the fuck out by it, and to be able to express that opinion too. [That and, frankly, demonizing someone because they dated your crush is just...really. Kinda silly, particularly when they're already out of the way].

Though, I will say writing something with *real* names and posting it publicly on something like tumblr is going too far.

The Tumblr thing was SO SO SO out of line. If it involves your FRIENDS ffs what on Earth would make you think it's ok to publish that shit, ANYWHERE. ESPECIALLY WITH REAL NAMES. The whole thing just has me going "dnw dnw dnw D:"

I'm curious how you feel about RPF? Because personally this is exactly why I don't like it. I find it creepy and weird and dnw. Those are real people with real friends. I know a lot of people use the excuse of "but they put themself in the public eye" and "but their public persona is the same as a character" but I just don't buy that. With the internet the way it is today one could argue that we all put ourselves in the public eye and we all have public personas.

I find what OP describes in the secret super creepy and crossing a line, but I see it as the same thing as writing RPF. Creepy and weird RPF, but then there's a lot of that out there. And RPF where you send it to all the people involved, but then some weirdo fans to that too.

I'm indifferent to RPF. For me, what makes this secret skeevier than run of the mill RPF is that the girl posting the fic *knows* the people she's writing about. Their online social circles at the very least overlap somewhate, She talks to the guyregularly if not frequently. This massively increases the chances that he will end up seeing/reading/finding out about what she's posted without going looking for it, and also the chances that many other people he knows will find it as well.

Yeah, I don't like RPF either, for the same reasons. But this is like that, only more direct, which is just...worse. =/

The OP 100% has the right to be creeped out, but they don't have the right to take others rights away. The wording and idea behind this secret is what bothers me. No matter how creepy you find it, no matter how much of an ass move it is, that person still has the basic right to do what they did.

But when people say the phrase "You don't have the right" colloquially, they generally aren't referring to legal rights. They're saying 'this is a bad thing and you shouldn't do it, omg how dare you', not 'you should be jailed.'

Also, all things considered (the demonizing, etc), such a fic might well qualify as libel in a way that well-disclaimed and generally loving/homage RPF doesn't. In which case, yeah, I can see a case for them not even having the right.

I'm suddenly reminded of that secret some months ago where a girl found that an acquaintance / friend of hers had written creepy stories where his self-insert killed a girl with the same name as the OP in terrible ways and didn't know what to do after stumbling upon them on his lj.

Whatever became of that? I didn't frequent fs much between then and now; were there any updates on that?

(Or any updates about the OP that was a secret santa of sorts for charity and gave The Northern Lights to a girl asking for Twilight? >.>)

No, really, if anyone knows if there was any follow up on either of those, I'd be mightily grateful. It's been niggling at me nearly every time I visit f!s these days.

Do they have a legal right? Maybe. Is it a dick move and a totally awful thing to do? Yes. I really don't see how anyone can be defending that. I'm not saying they can't write it but for fuck's sake how is it in any way, shape or form okay to post it on Tumblr with REAL NAMES?

My problem is with the wording. They have that right, and OP is being a dick trying to say otherwise. If they'd phrased it differently "I'm disturbed by this" or something like that...yeah, it's creepy and weird but there is absolutely no way you can say someone doesn't have a right to do that.

And yeah, dick move to post it on Tumblr, but the internet is basically a free for all and they still have the right to do that. Trolls be trolls.
