I agree that sexism definitely played a role in the Maria-hate, but I also think the fact that she, well, wasn't Nick Fury contributed a lot to it as well. The "he may be a jerk, but he's our jerk" trope is a pretty powerful fandom response in long-running series. I think if a man who was approximately as douchebaggy as Maria had been in Maria's position, he would've gotten plenty of hate too. He wouldn't have gotten as much hate as Maria did (or another woman director would) because yeah, definite sexism in play, but I think there were multiple factors to her unpopularity.
