did you watch the s3 finale? bc honestly, i think it's always been clear that for stefan, damon will always come first. the choice he let elena make in the s3 finale, he would never let damon make. he was willing to let klaus live and stay enslaved rather than take the risk that damon would die, and he basically gave up everything he had in mystic falls, elena included, to save damon's life in the s2 finale.

idk, i think stefan's really fascinating (as long as he's away from elena), and his relationship with damon is a huge part of that.

You mean the S2 finale. Yes I watched it and it was the only part that actually gave me hope for the show. Still it was so out of the blue (where did this devotion come from? What was the build up to it? Are we supposed to believe it was always there and for some reason never shown to us?) and buried under the convoluted plot of season 3 so fast that it ended up as a misfire for me.

i mean the s3 finale as well, when elena told stefan to let her die, and he did. damon did the same exact thing in the s2 finale, and stefan didn't let him have his choice. and i feel like it was always there, tbh, even if the writing wasn't the best at portraying it sometimes. from the very beginning of their timeline, when they were best friends as humans and stefan forced damon to turn because he couldn't live without him, it's been there. oh, they hurt each other and fight, yeah, it's not an easy relationship by any means but when it comes down to the wire, stefan's always made it clear that damon is his first priority, even going back as far back as s1 when their relationship was the worst it's ever been, he couldn't kill him when he had the chance, and was willing to risk his life to save him in the finale of that one as well.

now whether stefan would be damon's first priority over elena is a different question, but w/e.

Ha, sorry, anon, I totally replied at the same time as you. But IA, and I tried to explain my ~feels~ below. XD

I think that they meant S3 finale. As in, Sefan would have never let Damon decide his fate; he would have done exactly what Damon wanted to do to Elena(chain her up and hide her in a well). And he's always been like that. That's why he made Damon turn in the first place. He cares about his brother, and he doesn't want to be alone, ultimately regardless of what Damon wants.

TBH their relationship seemed pretty far into the spotlight in the first half of the season at the very least; after Elena and Damon try to save Stefan, Elena confesses that she knows it'll ultimately be Damon that brings him back to his humanity, and in a way, she's right, because it's only when Michael threatens Damon that Stefan loses his apathy and begins to fight back. The humanity comes throughout the rest of the season, partially because of Damon, but largely because of Elena, iirc. Though, tbh, I think it was largely Damon and Elena's relationship that got him jealous, which is a feeling, which is part of being human. And the rest was just a transition. Which unfortunately took up the background while the Originals battled it out in the foreground.

Maybe you're right and there was really more shown than I saw (I gave up halfway through season 3. Must say I'm not thrilled to see they semi-rehashed S2 finale's plot for S3.) The show is-- the best word I can come up with is convoluted. Maybe if there weren't that many other plots going on around the main story of these three (the Caroline stuff, the Bonny stuff, the Originals, Elena's brother, the ghosts, Tyler and the wolves, the adults) it would've come across better. But to me it always felt like they overstuffed this show with too much story and the major points always got lost.

It wasn't really center-stage after the first half-dozen episodes, and even then, it was kinda worked into the plot so it didn't especially stand out. It was character dev, to set up them being united and opposed at the same time(on the same side but in love with the same girl). TBH I think it was all to make the set-up of the last three or four episodes work, which if you haven't seen, are pretty good, IMHO. Stefan and Damon agree that they work better together and Damon actually abides by what the three of them(Elena, Stefan, and Damon) decide. And then when it comes down to Elena choosing a brother, they each agree to respect her choice and to leave town if they're not picked. That moment between the two of them is awesome, or so I thought, because it felt like they were finally united. Of course, I'm sure next season they'll have to deal with differing opinions on how to deal with Elena's transformation.
I will totally agree about the convolutedness. Often it felt like each character was in their very own show with plots and subplots and subsubplots, and it was just nuts. I could have done without a lot of the extraneous ~dramatic~ points.
