Well, considering one of her earliest appearances in New Avengers had Hill refusing a direct order from the President, they were wrong about her being an easily controlled puppet, right?

"he had to commit career suicide to get the job done"

You mean that time where he lied to a team of heroes including Cap and Spidey to make them complicit in entering a non-hostile country and leveling the capital city, with the stated intent being vast collateral damage to stop them ever acting against the US? And then mindwiped his unwilling team? And then the US suffered a revenge attack that almost destroyed New York? Not to mention the team suffered individual revenge attacks - Luke Cage ended up in critical condition in hospital due to an attack he didn't even know to fear, because he'd been mindwiped.

The fact you're glossing over him tricking Cap and Spider-Man into aiding a terrorist attack designed to cause mass death before mindwiping them, but dwelling on the fact Hill was harsh with Daisy Johnson (who had leveled a fucking city) is a pretty good illustration of the raging double standard applied to Hill and Fury.

He was right though. Latvaria WAS were a threat. It wasn't petty 'Obey me or I'll ruin your career' play, it was a 'I need to do somthing awful to stop this shit before it gets worse' play.

That he paid a price for.

And she wasn't /harsh/ with Daisy. She was Petty with Daisy.

I'm not saying Furys plan it wasn't a colossal dick move, but it seems like it was necessary. And frankly given track records, experience levels, and just general ability levels of the characters I'd be more inclined to believe fury is being a bastard because there's no better way, than Hill (Hey, cap, You might be breaking a law in america soon just by existing without obeying me as head of shield. So obey me now or else.)

And, BTW, when did she refuse the pesident? Because I missed that but I bet it wasn't BEFORE the UNNECESSARY ethical and practical cluster-fuck of her actions in civil war.

....I gotta say, not really. IRL, that'd be true, but people don't hate fictional characters in direct proportion to the horrible things they did. They hate them for being petty, irritating, nasty, and having meager redeeming qualities. Hill's Civil War crap was absolutely horrible AND she didn't have a good rationalization for it AND she didn't have the established redeeming qualities and war hero status that Fury did. That makes her far more unlikable than Fury.

Let me put it this way -- who do you hate more, Loki or Obadiah Stane? Stane didn't kill hundreds of people or try to take over the world, but he was a cruel, greedy, traitorous creep with no redeeming qualities, whereas Loki was a complex character with a sympathetic backstory and emotional depth. Despite Loki's acts being far worse, he's far more likable than Stane.

Maria Hill was in over her head and trying to do the best job she could. Yeah, you're not going to like her if the only thing you've read with her in it is Millar's Civil War, but her character has done more than that.

I'd recommend reading New Avengers #16 and #25, for starters.
