I'd say it's because a public image is important to these stars. Not only are they judged by the public on their acting talent but also on them as a person. I think of numerous actors who are quite good at their work but have a bad public image because of something they did outside of a film.

Facial expressions are how humans judge each other. I was once at a convention in which I saw a star sitting at his celebrity booth alone. I would have loved to go over and talk to him but he had a very unfriendly look on his face. He probably wasn't really unfriendly and I was reading too much into his expression but he didn't look at all like he wanted the company of a fan. Similarly, if we saw a picture of a celebrity on the red carpet looking all pissed off and unsmiling, we'd think 'What's up their butt? They are rolling in money and fame, they have no reason to be unhappy'

At least that's my thoughts on it.
