...yeah this is just a case of you reading far too much into it. that's not male privilege. do you--do you even know how privilege works?

Man A will always pick Man B over Woman C because he's his brother and i assume OP prefers sibling relationships to romantic ones. Man B will probably always pick Woman C over Man A if that makes you...happy>

Yeah, this is just a case of you mansplaining because you're a misogynistic shit stain. Do you...do you understand how rape culture works? Or did you just conveniently forget that Damon is a rapist, and it doesn't matter one bit if he's Stefan's brother?

And no, that doesn't make me happy. The only thing I'd like to see a rapist pick is the edge of a very tall building.

lol wut

i'm not a man first of all but oh my god

why are you watching this show if you
do you realize that every single vamp on this show is a rapist and murderer first of all but i can't even like

are you just throwing every sexism hot word at the screen when you type and seeing if any of them stick bc wow

[personal profile] whoknows 2012-06-14 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not "throwing" words. I simply assume that when I post a comment about sexism that the people who reply will have at least a basic understanding of it. Maybe try typing it into a search engine? ;)

but nothing you've said at all in this conversation makes sense
how in the world is preferring your brother to your love interest rape culture

[personal profile] whoknows 2012-06-14 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of why rapists feel comfortable being rapists is because they face little in the way of social stigma compared to their victims. Families will happily shun a female rape survivor, yet most people see nothing wrong with a male rapist's family standing by him because omg u guise he's family! Being a rapist, yet remaining secure in the knowledge that your brother will always put you before the woman he loves is such obvious male privilege it never occurred to me that I would need to spoon feed an explanation to anyone. Oops.

True enough, Stefan and Damon are guilty of rape. Personally, I dislike both characters, but the secret was specifically addressing Stefan choosing Damon over Elena, so that was what I replied to.

....................................do u realize this is fiction? (blah blah fiction contributes to rape culture forms a normalization of it in society blah blah)

also i hesitate to label it male privilege. if damon were stefan's sister, he'd put her first. it has nothing to do with the fact that damon is a man that stefan puts him first.

and also now i get that you've actually never watched the show if you think damon is secure in his anything, much less stefan's love for him so.

god i never believed the shit they said about sjws before.

"blah blah fiction contributes to rape culture forms a normalization of it in society blah blah"

So you're fully aware of the fact that it does, yet you're still whining at me? Obvious troll has become a little too obvious. I'm done feeding you now.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
you're the one who has been talking down to everyone who dared wonder if maybe you were overreacting grievously, wrongly accused me of being a man because i dared hold a different opinion, and has basically thrown a giant temper tantrum for far too long because it's incomprehensible to you that one can like problematic stuff regardless of its problems, and realize there are larger, more important battles to be fought than "rape culture" in a fictional character's preferences between his brother and his love interest.

so, no, somehow i don't think i'm the troll.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-14 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason you're not making sense is because you've singled out Stefan's treatment of Damon as an example of male privilege and rape culture, when that in itself wouldn't change even if Damon were "just" a murderer, or a woman. The actual example here is that this character, who is a serial rapist, is still fawned over by viewers of the show, whereas a comparable female character in the same situation would likely not enjoy such adoration.
