One of my friends really wants me to play P3. Should I get the PSN download version or the PSP version?

If you're playing it on your PSP, they're both the same thing. Unless you're not talking about P3P, but the FES download, in which case don't get the psn one (it's essentially an expansion pack with it's own story focusing on a different character).

Yeah, I'm trying to decide between getting P3P and getting the original PS2 version via PSN (I think I heard it was going for only $10 rn).

Quickie differences:

PSN: It's FES, the updated version of the original P3. It has full cutscenes and exploration. You can only play as a boy. You can only manually control the main character in battle; your other party members use AI. There is an additional episode, "The Answer", that takes place after the main storyline.

P3P: You can play as a boy or a girl; girl has different social links. "The Answer" is not available. Cutscenes are pared down; exploration uses menus instead of free exploring. You can manually control your party members.

So, overall, it's up to you which version you like better! Have you ever played a Persona game before?

I haven't, no! My friend really thinks I would like the series and says I need to play P3 before P4. Thanks for explaining all the differences to me.

No problem! The Persona games are really great and they got me to start playing other SMT games. You can play them in whatever order you want, but P4 does have a cute cameo from a P3 character (unrelated to the main plot).

What my friend said is that the P4 game mechanics make the P3 ones seem unbearable, so it's much less of a chore if you play P3 first. :/

Well, it's not unbearable, but... yeah, your friend's right, they're pretty sucky. The game's team AI will fight you every step of the way. In P3/FES, your teammates have no way to defend against weaknesses, so sometimes you may have to just bosses kill off weak members or just solo/double-team them with a good teammate. Definitely frustrating at times!

If you get P3P though, that uses P4 mechanics. I haven't played that version but I'd imagine it's way more manageable.

I played P3P after P4 and yeah, it's much more manageable than what I've heard about P3/FES. The AI is pretty much the only thing that's kept me from trying the original out, because I can't imagine getting through a game that depends so much on exploiting weaknesses and casting the right buffs at the right time without being able to control three of the four party members. :/

...How the heck did you even attempt to claim that Maya doesn't count? I know you probably don't actually think that, judging from the actual secret here, but... how did anyone even buy that in the first place??

Yes, I'm seconding this. I try not to be judgmental, but I can't help but judge people who says that Maya doesn't count as a female protagonist. If she wasn't counted as a female protagonist due to her being the main lead of the second-half of P2 which is a solid individual game, why shouldn't the same reasoning apply to female MC in P3? That's just bullshit.

Ahaha, OP here. Sorry, I should've made myself clear. >.< That's just something I say. I definitely, definitely count Maya as a female protagonist!
