I'm the opposite.

As someone who knows what its like to to contemplate and obsess over suicide Lane hanging himself was horrifyingly real to me, we actually saw the planning and lead up to it. I wasn't right for a while after watching it.

I mean I've never used the word 'triggered'before, but GOD DAMN.

Don't feel bad about using the term "trigger" here. Depictions of suicide are a very real and common trigger for people with depression or other mental illness and you shouldn't feel wrong for wanting to avoid seeing that. Out of all the triggers (well, and stuff like self-harm or anorexia) this one seems the most obvious really

I will never forgive this show for killing him off unless Jared Harris comes back and talks to Joan, but tbh I don't think they're ever going to give her closure because Joan never gets to be happy, ever. They would have been perfect together: he appreciated everything about her that no one else ever recognized, and she would have talked him through his problems and helped him be a better socializer.

If Matthew Weiner completely abandons what happened and has all the characters basically forget about Lane, I will stop watching. I don't care if ignoring suicide is "what people did back then," they can't avoid it forever. Hopefully his bitchy wife will stick around to make trouble for Don somehow. So mad, sorry, rant over. I love Lane too; he was a charming nerd and I always related to his outsiderness.

I haven't finished season 4 yet, but... they have yet to bring up Joan's rape again, so I'm afraid it's highly possible Lane killing himself will be forgotten about too. =\

I was under he impression Joan/Lane was non-consensual, but I'll be happy if it isn't.

The rape is not forgotten. Non-consensual? Do you mean one-sided? Joan doesn't have the same feelings he does, but she's very fond of him, even to the point of being affectionate and subconsciously leading him on in one scene in season five. Personally, I think she reciprocates just a little bit, purely out of curiosity. Her whole character changes around him, and she displays kindness and sympathy that is totally at odds with her ass-kicking persona to the secretaries.

I think this is mostly because Lane treated Joan totally differently than any of the others. He actually did respect her, and not in a 'ball-busting bitch' way but as he probably respected the Queen - a woman with skills, brains, and wit who could get things done.

I think Joan really responded to that, to being seen as more 'equal' to Lane than the other men (who knew of her history more than he did) ever did.

This is absolutely all true, but what I meant by "reciprocate" was that in "Signal 30," you can see that she kisses him back and then pulls away almost immediately, and that's in addition to brushing his hair back and telling him that he's different from the other partners. Joan at least had a platonic affection for him.

Ah! I was speaking in a more general sense, but i get what you're saying. I also have a dreadful memory and *no* memory of that, but hey - that's my problem. :)

Joan's rape was brought up again this season, but it was such a private thing- known only by the two involved- that it was kind of expected neither of them would discuss it. I don't think Lane's suicide will be as easily avoided- he was a partner, his name's in the agency name.

Joan/Lane non-consenual... hmm. He kissed her when she didn't want to be kissed, and inwardly it may have been triggering for her but Lane apologized and they continued to be civil for the rest of the season. Maybe not quite as close as before, but they still had a very different relationship together than anyone else at the agency. If Lane hadn't been slated to die this season, I would have guessed that he and Joan would wind up together by the end of the series.

I would suggest finding a hobby that gets you outside of the circle of the people you know. Otherwise you'll never meet anyone to have a real relationship with.

Lane was such a boring character, I'm just glad they wrote him out of the show finally

Though I wish they could've done it another way besides suicide since that's majorly triggering for me but yeah
