I think that while it's their right to request it, it's kind of silly, especially since it's super easy to get around. I'm very big on Legend of the Seeker, and the author of the original Sword of Truth books the series was based on has requested that people don't write fic about his books. However, since the TV rights are different, people can write fanfic freely about Legend of the Seeker, and I've seen a lot of places where people will be taking a lot of book canon into the TV series fanfic. So it feels almost like requesting "no fics about Sword of Truth" is kind of not going to do much, because people are going to write fics about Richard and Kahlan anyways. The books and the TV series are very different, but still.

imho, if an author with a "no fanfic" policy signs a TV deal (or movie, to a lesser extent), they basically lose their rights to restrict their fans. authors almost never even sit on the writing team for their shows, which means those people are basically writing fanfiction, according to an author who thinks fanfic is someone else playing with their toys.

a TV deal just says "i actually am cool with other people writing my characters, i'm just fucking greedy".

I've always wanted fics from the Sword of Truth books because while the later books kind of go off the deep end, I think the darker/more adult content in the books would produce a whole different set of fics than LOTS has. Not that I don't love LOTS or its fics, because I do. A lot. But I'd really love book!fics too.

Yeah, I agree. I haven't read to the later books yet (only on book 3 and I already prefer Wizard's First Rule to the other), but I've heard differing opinions in regards to quality. But yeah, they're very different, LOTS and SOT, but I think people have gotten around the SOT fic ban by disguising it as LOTS, I guess.
