But the attitude of saying that an author is stupid if they don't want fanfic of their work isn't saying anything about sex as much as it's saying that the fans feel entitled to the author's approval. I mean, fans are gonna write fic whether or not the author approves, so why are they getting their pants in a twist about how "stupid" some author is for not "letting" them write fic, unless it's just because they feel like the author is a big meany for Not Liking Something.

I was replying to the previous commenter's attitude toward sexual stuff, not the discussion in general, but thanks.

As for what you're saying, I don't think authors need to approve of the porn or anything, but fandom usually exists in a comfortable state of the majority of fans doing what they want but not bothering the author, and the author pretending their fans are totally not weird. Going out of your way to be like, NO STOP DOING THAT feels like the author is saying, "I'm totally cool with you spending money on my works, but I'm going to tell you what to do with it in your own time." I don't expect the author to have to like what I'm doing with it in my own time, but it feels like as long as I'm not making any money off someone else's work, it's kind of my own business? That's what it is I guess.

I don't know that many authors go out of their way to discourage fanfic. Usually, it's because someone asked, and they said no, usually in a public setting.

Or because they found the fanfic and didn't like it. That seems more common, honestly.

The fact that you can't post fanfiction on FF.net for authors who forbid it has been a big blocker for a lot of fic. Not to mention Anne McCaffrey has been rather militant over the years about striking down fanfic authors. She seems to have stopped bothering, though. Every once in a while some published author writes some big long essay talking about how fanfic authors are all perverts who are wasting their time on garbage and he'll never allow that shit(like GRRM), which is insulting to say the least.

And to be fair, she did actually start allowing fan fic before she died. Just so so long as it wasn't slash of her characters. Which gave me the urge to write hardcore F'nor topping F'lar and I'm not even a (male)slash writer.
