I was a teenager when it was on and a big Trek fan. Babylon 5 and Deep Space Nine actually aired back-to-back on the same channel on the same night where I lived (both were in first-run syndication, remember) and it was the most awesome thing ever to have a two-hour block of cool sci-fi shows.

Even at the time, I found a lot of the writing and acting on B5 a bit stilted and awkward. There was also something a little... fan-boy-ish about it? That kind of turned me off. It's hard to explain. Anyway, it was the soap opera aspect of B5 that drew me in and held me captive. I personally consider DS9 to have been the superior show, but even for all of its Dominion War arc and other continuing plot threads, DS9 was much more episodic and one could (and I did) move in and out of watching it without too much trouble, whereas with B5 I absolutely had to know what was going to happen next.
