(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 06:25 am (UTC)(link)Let's say a blogger posted an extensive and scathing review of a book, dissecting the characters and plots and interpreting events as they saw fit.
Let's say the author found out about this and took offense, saying that they took the criticism and interpretations as a personal attack and did not believe that people had the right to post such reviews, and attempted to convince popular blogging platforms to take them down when they were posted.
Would anyone take that seriously? Isn't the blogger 'entitled' to their opinion of the work, even if it's negative or contrary to what the author had in mind?
But when these interpretations take story form - even when they're clearly labeled as just that, *interpretations* of a work that the fic-writer makes no claim to own, influence, or speak for - suddenly they belong in a vastly different category and one which the creator of the original content believes that they have the right to police.
