Vine Snakes (they're totally snivys and servines and serperiors)

And for today's spider...

Let's take a look at Bagheera kiplingi! And yes, it really is named for Bagheera from the Jungle Book. A species of jumping spider that's found in Central America, it's particularly notable for the fact that it's... well, mostly vegertarian. It doesn't eat bugs, just the tips of the leaves on the ant acacia plant. That's what it appears to be holding in most of the pictures. While a few other spider species have also been shown to eat nectar, none does it to the extent that these little guys do. They're known to live in groups and hang out together. The males even stick around and help the female spiders look after their babies- something which pretty much no other spider species does.

And here's a video if you want to watch one of them in action!

Awwww... so many cute little snakes!

I love the one peeking out from under his own coils, and the one coming out of the egg. And those vine snakes are neat looking! (-:

Snakes can get very knotty sometimes! Vine snakes are neat looking though, aren't they? I wasn't sure if I should put them down because of whether or not they qualified as cute, but then I remembered that they looked like pokemon...

Awww, the baby snakes are cute :)

The first snake is so cute! The one just coming out of its shell looks like a piebald jelly bean. The red-yellow-black one is simply gorgeous. <3

More hatching snakes! This one is a viper. And if you're interested in colourful snakes, well- it's not the same as in the picture, but the Regal Ring Necked snake does have very fascinating colours- like this!

Snakes around fingers = why am I imagining a weddding ring prank?

And as for the spiders, huh. The more you know...

[personal profile] joltymcjolterson 2012-06-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
There are actually some pretty funky rings in that shape! It'd be troublesome getting a real snake to sit still for so long, though.

And while there are other spiders who do feed on nectar, most of them only do so in the juvenile stage of life. That's why B. Kiplingi stands out so much!

Just so you know while flailing in excitement over this post I hit myself in the face.

They are, aren't they!

Here is a baby ball python for you, maybe it'll be less freaky? They're non venomous and sort of round, I think they're sweet.

They are small when they are babies, yeah! That thing in the first pic is actually an acorn.

Here is another wee snake. It's a Texas Brown Snake, and they are small for snakes even when fully grown!

sdkfja the snakes <3333 I adore snakes. The other day I was listening to a lecture, and they were saying that snakes are the symbol of evil, and a lot of evil spirits like taking the form of snakes. That made me incredibly sad.

The little snake peeking out of its egg just melts my heart ;;
