From what I understand his race/ethnicity was purposely very ambiguous. His country of origin is fictional and his accent is French.

No I wasn't saying that. Just that it is a widely varying accent.

I was going to say- my mother's boyfriend was born in England but his family is from Ghana (and has a brother who lives in France), so why the heck not?

Ah. Again, having not seen the movie I was just going off of his physical appearance, so...

When the movie first came out I remember quite a few people had issue with how ambiguous he looked/sounded. A lot of people weren't happy that his voice actor was Brazilian and in some of the publicity pictures Prince Naveen looked a lot lighter in skin tone. The overall implication being that Disney didn't want to commit to a black prince and therefore made him open to interpretation.

He definitely doesn't look white to me, at very least. Though honestly, having a mixed race couple would probably be even more groundbreaking for Disney since how often do you see that in popular media?

I personally liked Prince Naveen but also could see how some people took his character. I also agree with you on the interracial couple point. I just remember some people feeling that Disney thought a male black lead was too "threatening" so they had watered him down to make him more acceptable.

Hmm. I've never seen the movie but I personally get the feeling he is of mixed race.

Some of the "lookalike" Naveen actors disney hired look totally white though. Sometimes they'll cast a black or indian guy but the two times I've gone they were white guy's with a tan (or possibly hispanic). I remember hearing a little girl asking why Naveen wasn't black and her parents fretting for an acceptable answer ><

I guess Disney isn't super concerned with making Naveen look like any certain ethnicity for the RL actors. They always keep it ambiguous and generic-looking with their RL POC princesses. Even the white prince's (never the princesses) have ethnic ambiguity at times. I personally don't mind but I can see how someone else bringing their small child might (confusing racial identity/whether or not they accept interracial relationships).

Yeah I believe he may be racially mixed also. Possibly haitian creole and white american.

I wasn't saying that he couldn't be black and have a french accent. Just that his accent was could apply to any number of ethnicities.

OT but did anyone else see The Intouchables? It recently started showing in US theaters and my oh my Omar Sy caused my panties to combust.
