Why couldn't they have just made Naveen black? There are black people in Europe too.
Though I suppose, given this was 1920s America, that would have made Charlotte not want to marry him like she did?

See, never having seen the movie I though he was - oops. That is very potentially interesting why they chose to *not* make him such then.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
He certainly wasn't white. And it was a Disney movie, so it seemed like it was almost set in an alternate New Orleans were racism wasn't a big deal (it was never brought up iirc. In the actual 1920s if Tiana approached those white dudes to get that property, they probably would have scorned her even more than they did because she was black...and a woman to top it off). If Charlotte wouldn't have married him because he was black, she probably wouldn't have married him because he was...Indian(?) either.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-18 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Racism is sort of there in the way Tiana was told she was outbid (told that a woman of her background is better off where she's at, or something similar), and the demonstration of how the black population was also the poor population.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-18 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In that case they should have just made him black. There are no black male disney characters (except Mr. Bubbles).

What about Sweet from Atlantis? I always thought he was the best one in that films, too ...

Drive by Sweet love! Haha, that sounds wrong.

SWEET.

I love Atlantis.

So many delightful, varied characters.

Sweet's technically biracial. Which is also awesome. c:

Why does the black princess have to be with a black dude?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well all the other princesses got with a dude the same race as them?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
da

I'm black and, tbh, when my friends in I heard about Disney making a black princess finally, we thought it would have been neat if they made the prince white or something because having an interracial couple would have been pretty cool

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I am pretty damn sick of every single character ending up with someone of the same race.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Pocahontas ended up with a white dude and so did Kida from Atlantis the Lost Empire and Esmerelda from Hunchback of Notre Dome. The only non-caucasian same race couples I can think of are Mulan/Shang, Aladdin/Jasmine, and Nami/David.

So far there are zero non-caucasian men with women of a different race.

Unless you count Naveem himself. The name of his land suggests Eurasian though he himself is voiced by a brazillian actor.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be silly. The only interracial couples that matter are black/white.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
don't you mean white/black?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Anon from the list post.

Sorry, haven't seen Princess and the Frog yet. Most of what I know about the prince is coming from reading this post, and the post is telling me 1) speaks French 2) No clue where his possibly imaginary country might be based. Europe? Asia?? Africa??? South America???? Some made up continent???

So I had no clue whether to mark Tiana's relationship with him as same race or interracial.

Pochahontas?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Technically going on the book it was based off of they made the princess black and left the Prince as he was in the book: From an indeterminate maybe Middle Eastern country.

[personal profile] kayleen_san 2012-06-19 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
There was ONE line they said at the party that hinted at racism on their part, and Tiana got a facial expression that showed that she caught on. I was glad they didn't ignore the issue COMPLETELY.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-18 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Because his personality would have played into some pretty horrible stereotypes if he had been black. The prince in this movie was going to have problems no matter what.

See, here's the problem: if they made him black, people would have accused them of not having the guts to show an interracial relationship and of saying that black woman should only marry black men. Had they made him any other ethnicity, people would have (and did) complained about not getting a black prince. I figure they compromised by making him as ambiguous as possible and I can't fault them for that.

Plus, y'know, I think it's actually really good to see an interracial relationship that does not involve any white people. That almost never happens.

I dislike that Naveen wasn't black, but this right here is the best upside of it that I've seen.
