I don't have a problem with "Uh, why do people like this? I don't get it" if it's meant as "Hey! Share with me why this is awesome! I need more awesome things in my life!" But, yeah, if it's meant as "You're stupid and your ship is stupid," I agree.

And the "You're sick if you like this" really annoys me. It's fandom, it's fantasy. I've never been able to figure out how people can supposedly infer everything about a person's character based on what they fantasize about. It just doesn't make sense.

So basically: yes, and I wish people spent more time talking to one another about why they like things and less time talking about why they don't.

Fun is contagious. So is drama. But one of those is more, well, fun than the other one.

Mostly agreeing with this comment, but what's wrong with saying "I don't get" it in a negative way? I thought that was the polite way to express dislike of something. It's what I say about things that don't appeal to me, but I never mean it like "you're stupid and your ship is stupid"... just that it's not something I'm interested in.

Because, more often than not, when it's used negatively it's another way of saying 'How can anyone like this? It's so gross/stupid/revolting/etc'. I've always found it better to just be honest and admit that whatever it is isn't your cup of tea.

On the other hand we're kind of running out of English language to express a personal dislike of a fandom without necessarily implying a lack of quality...

What's wrong with "I don't like it"?

You've expressed your personal dislike yet have said nothing about the quality.

Nothing. :-) I just mean that I think some people are nasty about what they don't get/like, and I think that just creates wank. I don't think "I don't like that" by itself is a bad thing at all.

Personally, I get a knee-jerk reaction from that phrase, because of the long string of secrets that used it to mean: "I don't understand you and I can't be arsed to even try. Stop thinking differently from me!"
