Actually, most cults repeatedly contradict themselves. Even larger religions do.

"Wait, we said polygamy was right? Well, it turns out that we can't be a state if we keep doing that, so god says polygamy is wrong."

I didn't mean external consistency, I meant internal consistency. If they do contradict something they said before, they do it as a group (or else the group removes them). The example you provided shows that as well!

Either way, larger religions are made up of a lot of different branches and something like "Islam as a whole" can't be compared to a small cult.
