If someone in fandom gushes over something I don't like, of course I'm going to say something about it. Why? Because that's life. Whenever you express your opinions, other people are going to express theirs, and sometimes you're going to have your feelings hurt.

I've never understood this ultra-liberal bull about being totally accepting/inclusive of absolutely everything. Or, at the very least, keeping your mouth shut if you don't agree with someone's else's preferences, views, or whatever. It's the internet, not your private, personal sanctuary. If you're afraid of people disagreeing with you, or calling you out, about your likes, dislikes, etc., then perhaps the Internet isn't where you should be hanging out.

I'm not holding anyone else's hand, babying them, or going easy on them, if they start squawking about crap that pisses me off. I don't care about their feelings, or their self-esteem, or whatever. It's not my problem. If you feel the need to express yourself around me, then you'd best be ready to handle my self-expression right back at you. Otherwise, keep it to yourself or grow a thicker skin.

Okaaaaaaaaaaaay, but...

...why do other people's shipping preferences piss you off, exactly?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, no... most people don't feel the need to jump in with their own disagreement simply because someone is innocently gushing about fandom. I mean, really, gushing pisses you off?

"Ultra-liberal bull" about respecting that other people have different opinions from you, even in fandom?

Why yes, you do sound very conservative. No wonder the world's a mess. LOL doomed.

Man, you sure sound like a damn unpleasant person. I like it when people respect my feelings, personally, and I like to do the same for them. I mean, if you don't that's your choice, I just don't see a damn point in ruining other people's fun because you don't care about how they feel. Seems selfish, you know?

But no seriously, you sound like an asshole.

There's a big difference between expressing an opinion and raining on someone's parade. If you aren't asked for your opinion on someone's ship, and they're just drawing it/writing it, what's the point of telling them you hate it? It does nothing other than cut into their fun.

Now if they're wanting you to participate in some way like RPing or something, then you can just say you don't really enjoy that pairing and leave it at that.

Well, you sound like a delight.

Because, the way it's often done isn't in response to a direct confrontation about a 'ship. There's a difference between refusing someone shoving their dessert in your face at the same table, and stopping by a stranger's table on the way out, sneering at their dessert, and saying, "Wow, chocolate - are you without ANY fucking taste at all?"

uhm... I think that if bashing "makes you feel better" you can do that.. in your own blog or site. You can also disagree with people if you're posting in a message board and you're asked to voice an opinion.
BUT if you purposely go on someone else's blog/site and troll their fanarts with gratuitous bashing, you do have a problem because you are not able to accept people having different opinions than yours
If you, at tumblr, purposely reblog posts/fanarts about a pair you dislike just for the sake of bashing it, you do have a problem because you are not able to accept people having different opinions than yours.
If you make a gazillion of essays about how a ship suck for you and the fans are blind, stupid, tasteless for shipping it and then proceed to post them in public communities (knowing that the fans of the ship you're bashing will read your shit) or tag them with the ship tags at tumblr (knowing that the fans of the ship you're bashing will read your shit) you're baiting shipper wars (when you really could use your energy writing about what you love instead of essentially making what you hate the star of your blog)
What do you expect? People jumping ship just because you tell them that yours is better? It's fail.
and also don't do to other people (or ships) what you don't want people to do to you (or your ship)
I have noticed how the most vocal haters and trolls (the ones that bash ships in their fanarts) usually are the most defensive ships in the fandom. They can bash a ship till the end of time but don't you dare to say a thing about their own ships they'll get livid and act like YOU're the a-hole and the mean one.
