That is the nice thing to do, I think. If the story evolved into something different as they were writing it...fine, but since they get so much pleasure out of writing something their slash fans hate I have to wonder if they hinted at a slash pairing while all the while meaning to include the het one. What everyone else said: kind of a dick move.

Yup. I've seen many fics where, if the pairing changes, they list the initial pairing and the end-game pairing.

So there's no excuse for this other than the OP being a jerk.

Or having an obsession with their prankster gambit.

If I were reading this story as a slash fan I'd be disappointed, but if I didn't like the het pairing, would probably just stop reading. I can imagine the author getting lots of angry comments though... (which they'll apparently delight in. Wish no one would give them the satisfaction.)

I like it too! It's even warmed up to different pairings than I usually read.

I would stop reading right away.

This fic in question is either a trollfic or the secret is a troll. There's no other way to explain this situation.

The terrible part of trolling, is that you can be a troll without realizing it.

Based on the joy they seemed to take in it I was pretty sure it was done spitefully but I wasn't sure about ff.net's pairing listing or if they could have updated it if it had evolved into a het pairing.

Haven't been to FF.net in a good while so I'm not sure...but they probably could've at least put it in the summary if not anywhere else?

That's the standard etiquette. If it doesn't fit in the summary, you can put it in the first chapter in an author's note.

In fact, ff.net increased the summaries maximum length (possibly the only change I liked out of the many they implemented recently), so that's not an excuse any more!

Troll for SURE then! Putting it in authors notes in the first chapter would be lovely, as would authors notes at the start of the chapter (if you can put authors notes before the story) they're currently on so people who've been reading all along are informed too. Oh...dicks.

You can put author's notes in a chapter as long as the notes aren't the whole chapter.

That rule started because sometimes there were stories that had a multitude of "chapters" that consisted only of author's notes.

Ah, okay, gotcha. That and the maximum summery increase are nice policies, but I can't say anything for the rest of them.
