To be perfectly honest, I don't believe that they're really catgirls or vampires either, but on the other hand... many people believe a ton of weird things that aren't true, but still fall into the socially acceptable range. So I don't know why otherkin are such a big deal, and I sort of wish we could stop making fun of them because I'm really sick of the persecution complex some of them are developing.

Oh please. People like that will get a persecution complex from anything. Unless everybody they meet totally belies and respects their bullshit, they'll feel persecuted. See also: Evangelical Christians.

I think people who go around being loud about being otherkin are actually looking for a reason to feel special, being told off and then call persecution.
