To be fair, teen romance/childhood sweethearts being the endgame for life is kinda over-represented in fiction.

Oh goddess this. I got involved in a relationship when I was 17 that later turned abusive and I very nearly didn't get out. Between the Christian dogmatic "You can only be with one person!" (I'm not even sure where I picked that one up since both my parents were on second marriages and were very open that sometimes the first person you're with is not The One) and the whole media romanticization of teen romances, I thought that I would be Doing It Wrong if I didn't stick it out. Thankfully, I had good friends to smack some sense into my skull.
