I do agree that it sucks when people feel the need to judge others for what they ship/which characters they like/what kind of kinks get them off/etc...but unfortunately that's just something that happens in fandom. While I've never been involved in a fandom where I was attacked all the time, it's happened occasionally and it sucks. It sucks to see it happen to other people, as well.

As for what to do about it...I don't think it'll go away anytime soon? So the only suggestion I'd have is to build up an flist/friends circle full of people who share your opinions or are capable of discussing things without devolving into personal attacks. I don't always agree with everyone on my flist but I've managed to find a good group of friends who accept that my opinions may differ from theirs and vice versa. We can still discuss the fandoms we love even though we don't agree on every aspect. Granted, that's a somewhat passive way to participate in fandom but it does help keep the negativity away.
