It was a thing in Russia, playing on cultural fears about lesbianism in young women amongst the nouveau riche class after the fall of the Soviet Union. One of the girls was a devout Orthodox Christian, and had huge problems with it, but their manager steamrolled them into it, since it would make money. And boy, in Russia, it sure did.
