Raccoons and more! But mostly raccoons.

[personal profile] joltymcjolterson 2012-06-22 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hullo! Last day of the week, tomorrow we start a new round of things. I've got something in mind for a theme...ish thing that'll carry us through a month of cute stuff easily, but let's see how it goes first. I'm glad to see that the rats yesterday went over well, though. Rats in general are cute to me- and in all honesty domesticated rats make far better first time pets than animals such as dwarf hamsters, which, while usually cute and small, also tend to be horribly inbred, not very trainable, and vicious little buggers that do not cuddle (I speak from experience here, sadly).

But anyway, today's animal! Let's turn our attention to the one and only raccoon, aka the common raccoon, aka the North American raccoon, aka the northern raccoon, aka the coon.

It's an American animal through and through, being native to North America. While they came from forests, they're insanely adaptable and smart and now live anywhere from heavily urbanised environments to way up in the mountains. They have extremely sensitive hands, and more than anything else, touch is their most important sense- that's why raccoons can often be seen patting at things. If you're looking for tiny and cute, though, the smallest raccoons can be found in Florida. Those guys only weigh ab out 4.5-6.5 pounds on average. Since most raccoon subspecies are generally similar, though, I won't really be differentiating between them for this post.

There are plenty more pics and videos to find if you'd like to look up more! Seriously, youtube has loads, and I can spend hours there. Do check some out if you're interested!

Meanwhile, spider! They actually make surprisingly good pets. Today's feature is one of the most common tarantulas that's avaliable in pet stores- the Chilean rose tarantula, or Grammostola rosea. They're very gentle pets that don't require much, and are quite sweet, although not the most energetic. If something threatens them, they're far more likely to panic a little and try to find a place to hide than they are to actually attack anything. They're also really pretty! Let's check some of them out. Think of them as tiny eight-legged multi-eyed cats that eat mainly bugs and chill out on your hands that... okay, are maybe not quite so much like cats.

And that brings us to the end of the week! Any thoughs? Ideas for future weeks? (Though next week's sort of planned out already.) I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Putting these together might take a while, but it's been interesting for me!

Also, a special shoutout to one of my favourite species of snake that I didn't put in the post because I didn't think it'd qualify as cute: atheris hispida, the spiny bush viper. They're vipers that are found in Central America, and I do think they're fascinating to look at.

Way cool post!

My aunt spent years rehabilitating orphaned baby raccoons and releasing them into the wild.

I have a suggestion: babies of really big animals. Like, baby elephants or baby walruses. Because from my experience most people associate "cute" with "small", and I think it's a bit sad.

Ricky, holding an alphabet picture book turned to R for raccoon: "Holy fuck! RAKE-ins! That's what those furry little bitches, Julian, that are fucking me over are! RAKE-ins!"

Raccoons always make me think of Ricky and Trailer Park Boys. Yay! Can someone post a video of him feeding the baby raccoon with a bottle? I would, but I'm on my phone.

D'awww, the raccoon cuddling with the guy is so adorable <3

Cool story time! Once, my mum was driving through the parking lot of a resort we were staying in alone at night time, and she saw a dead raccoon that someone had run over. She nearly had a panic attack. I was just very sad about the raccoon :(

A spider would make an awesome pet, but I'd be so scared of it getting squished. I need a pet with bones; one I can hug! Sorry spiders!

Thanks for these posts!

Advice?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So there's this fic I've been writing and publishing under one account. It's gotten far enough for all the major details/elements of the setting to show up. For personal reasons, I want to deactivate this old account and create a new sock account that will have nothing to do with the original one. But I still want to keep the fic going.

I've been rewriting it from the beginning to see what I can change while still telling the story I want to tell, and there aren't a lot. I really want to publish the rewritten chapters, but I'm afraid of being accused of plagiarizing what is actually my own work. The fic wasn't huge when it was first published and only had about six regular commenters, but what it if one of them show up? What should I do?

Re: Advice?

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-06-22 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I think you'd be somewhat of an asshole if you don't plan on telling those six readers of yours that you plan on continuing the fic elsewhere.

But aside from that, I don't see a problem with it. If anyone ever calls you on it, just privately contact them and explain that you had to create a new account for reasons of your own.

Why not be upfront? 'This is a reworking of an older fic of mine so if you recognise any of it, that would be why.' A lot of people have done stuff like that and I doubt it would attract any kerfuffle.

Re: Advice?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-22 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I want this account to not be associated with my older account in any way.

Is there a reason you can't simply publish the fic on your old account, as a final work of sorts, and then just resume all regular activity on the new account?

You could also have an extra sock for that specific work, and just point your readers to the new bookmark location. (Look up how to orphan work on ao3 if that's also an option?)

Re: Advice?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Create a separate sock just for that fic (and other fics from the old account, maybe) and keep everything else on the new sock.

I've seen a fic on AO3 where the author name and link is replaced by the word "Anonymous", and the author was still able to reply to comments as "Anonymous".

Or don't deactivate the old account until the fic is complete.
