I had a hard time watching it because she acts, and in someways looks, like my mother.

(*psst* wrong secret)

I agree that you're doing exactly what other fangirls are doing. The need to justify anything with, 'but they had a bad childhood!!1' no matter what/who you're trying to justify is kinda lolworthy.

Both of them have had shitty things happen to them, but they have dealt with it in obviously different ways, and their situations are not the same at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I think they're fairly different. A couple of days ago, someone described the situation between Tony and Loki as being more meaningful because Tony was a HERO, but still had a crappy childhood, his father figure betray him, and experienced genuine emotional and physical trauma, whereas Loki, according to every source we see in the films, was treated as Thor's equal and had a lavish and luxurious life. He wasn't popular, and, yes, his father lied to him, but that in no way justifies his insane batshittery. So it makes Loki more pathetic and unjustified when compared to Tony.

That said--emotional distance isn't really abuse. It can be awful and might rightfully damage a kid, but it's not the sort of mental, emotional, or physical act that qualifies it as an abuse. But I don't think OP was justifying anything--s/he doesn't really need to, since Tony isn't a bad guy with any truly bad traits.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's the same thing at all. Tony, for all his faults, isn't a supervillain, and as long as you're not using his (canonically) abusive father to justify overlooking said faults, go ahead and explore it.

Loki, on the other hand, didn't actually have an abusive childhood, and fangirls are just making stuff up to woobify him so they can handwave away all the truly terrible things he did and give him a hug.

This. They're different situations, and most of the ones with Loki tend to woobify him by making up abuse.

Yeah, I tend to agree here with you here.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-22 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
What I honestly find more frustrating is how bad childhood = excuse for whatever you're doing.

Bad experiences in the past may make it more understandable when you do shitty things but they never excuse them. Give them all the shitty childhoods you want but at least stop saying "Oh his childhood wasn't nice, he isn't to blame."

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.
I am so sick of seeing this in fiction in general.
"Bad stuff happened to them so they aren't responsible for their actions."

No, you're not responsible for bad things happening that you can't control, like someone else's actions to hurt you, or terrible tragedies and disasters.

But in the real world, you ARE responsible for how you react to that and your own choices.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't waste time complaining about fic, imo. People write what they write to get across the story they want to tell. They may choose the easiest path, such as shoehorning in abuse and have characters act OOC, but I can't be bothered to get worked up over it. I'd just hit the back button.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it really is a copout when they're talking moviesverse only and having Odin or Frigga be abusive.

However - in the comics, it's pretty explicit that he was abused by Laufey in at least one continuity. So there's that.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-23 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Er...I've personally seen loads of fic dealing with Tony's abuse too, often in really overblown ways -- in canon, Howard seems to have been a demanding and emotionally distant dick who never expressed affection or appreciation for his son, but obviously loved and admired Tony. In fanfic it's OMG HE GOT DRUNK AND BEAT HIM EVERY NIGHT blah blah blah. Not quite as annoying as the Loki stuff, but yeah.

And actually I've seen a good bit of abused!Tony fic that is very much like the woobie!Loki crap -- saying "oh, it's okay that Tony was such a giant dick pre-Afghanistan because he was DEALING WITH THE PAAAAIIIINNN" or "he only wanted to build weapons to make his daddy proud!" Like, no. Pre-Afghanistan Tony was a gigantic dickwad. Yeah, he had some redeeming qualities, but mostly he was a dickwad. Afghanistan is what made him change himself into a hero. That's actually maybe my favorite part of the entire character and the reason why Tony Stark is one of my favorite ever fictional characters of all time: the idea that this shallow selfish asshole could learn from an experience, open his eyes, absorb the idea that holy shit, I've done horrible things, and decide to tear down everything about his life and his beliefs and his profession and rebuild himself as a hero, all through sheer force of will. That's awesome.

So much +1 for this =D All the reasons you listed are why he's one of my favourite heros too. It's one thing to be born with super powers, it's another thing to make yourself into a hero.

I think you're being reasonable.

WRT Loki's oft fanbricated backstory, peeps gon' write what they like. I am kind of loath to being lumped in with them for being his fan, though. Eh he.

Well, actually...

Loki was abused as a child in some parts of the comic canon.

But I usually stay clear of those kinds of fics too, I can't stand reading fics where Loki becomes a villain just because his feelings were hurt as a child. I mean, he's a drama queen, but c'mon. He just likes being a villain plus he's insane.

Drive-by "thanks for the rec"!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if you can safely say "Loki's past abuse is all made up by fangirls". In movie canon, every childhood you imagine for Loki is made up, because we haven't seen it. Comic book canon is also tricky- because of their age (both Loki and Thor are over 2000 years old) all accounts of their childhoods are a bit shoddy, and usually told through someone else's eyes, so it's never a neutral POV. And every time Loki recounted his past in the comic books it did sound like he was at least mentally abused. And hell, Odin wasn't that great of a father for Thor, either.

I don't like fics where past abuse excuses a person's horrible actions in the present. But in AU fics? Go right ahead. In fics where Loki was abused and it's dealt with but Loki is still held accountable for his crimes? It's fantastic. A fanfic where every single member of the Avengers was abused in some way in the past? Sounds about right!

But Angst!Tony is so fucking boring in fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but so are "let's all make fun of Tony and show how awesome Black Widow is at putting him down" fics. And those two types take up most of the fandom. I want some awesome dickhead Tony being awesome building robots...but oh well, we can't always get what we want.
