OP here--- *hugs Zuko* His journey from powerlessness to self-mastery, under incredibly difficult conditions, has really affected my life for the better.

But we all know how... weird... fandom can get about sympathetic, attractive characters who are victims of abuse, and I honestly have been really reluctant to discuss my experiences in relation to his character for fear that it would be seen as attention-seeking etc.

Aw, I'm so glad you have that kind of relationship in your life OP; Zuko and Iroh's relationship was one of the sweetest things in the show for me.

You can always look at it differently: you are paying an amazing compliment to your step-mother. It sounds as if she is wonderful and it is great that she is helping you heal.

OP here--- thanks for giving me that perspective. My stepmother really IS (to me) as amazing, patient, compassionate, etc. as Iroh is to Zuko, and that's really the main reason why I even ended up freaking out about identifying with Zuko in the first place.

I'm going to let her know that she is my Iroh tomorrow :D

That's not Sueish at all. And you don't need to feel guilty for being glad that you were fortunate. You're supposed to be happy when good things happen to you.

I think these two are one of the sweetest relationships in the whole show (I just finished marathoning it this morning, and I watched the Zuko-Iroh reunion scene three times 'cause it is just so sweet) and it's lovely if you feel connection to them.

Identifying with Zuko is not sueish. The kid went through some real shit, and the reason his story is resonant is because a lot of people struggle with thematically similar problems.

Zuko. :-(

I don't think it's sue-ish to identify with Zuko. :) And I really like this secret. Iroh and Zuko really do have a beautiful relationship. Iroh loves him no matter what, even when Zuko is pushing him away. :')

I'm not familiar with the show, but from what I'm able to gather, your relationship sounds really amazing. I think it's fantastic that you have someone so important and wonderful in your life, and that she has someone who is able to appreciate her like you are! Please don't feel bad about anything.
