cancer triggers
lolwat

(Anonymous) 2012-06-22 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
came here to say this. Several of my close relatives have died of cancer, and my mom barely got out of it, but imo trigger warnings for cancer are pretty silly.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
didn't you know, reading about cancer can trigger it to recur!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like anybody is ever traumatized by grief or their own possible death.

Caring about people is hard.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
but why would you be traumatized about other people dying
shit happens to everyonw, and it's okay to feel sad about it, but making it a trigger sounds like a horrible way of dealing with it

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Different people deal with grief differently. Some don't do well with death.

Do you think people make things triggers on purpose? I mean, I'm sure some people out there have done that, but it's not usually how it goes.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's ridiculous to expect everyone to warn for everything that could possibly be a trigger. It's impossible. The best people can do is to try and warn for the really common ones. Warning for specific illnesses is excessive.

Shouldn't a "this story deals with depressing issues" warning suffice for most scenarios of that type?

Re: diff anon

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
In fairness, most stories dealing with depressing issues or having a depressing ending *are* labeled as at least part angst (imo, from what I've seen) - and yet, no, people don't take the "hello, depressing" hint, it seems. :(

And some people are little babies and we shouldn't have to tiptoe around their bullshit.

CRY.

SOME.

MORE.

BABIES.

Most of the time, people don't die on purpose, or get sick on purpose. It's not all about you.

"why would you be traumatized about other people dying"

Well, I don't know about other people, but it sent me into a 5 year long depression I'm just now starting to dig out of. Just saying.

Terminal cancer patients read fic too?

But if you were *triggered* by *cancer* you wouldn't be able to watch TV or read books without a full summary ahead of time or listen to the radio. So you definitely shouldn't be reading fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
They should put that on cigarette packets. "Warning: CANCER TRIGGER"

They do, but in a less amusing way.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen sillier. Like that one time I saw someone warn for QUEEN LYRICS in a Suits fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh this sounds more like an announcement for awesomeness ahead

I feel like some one secretly instigated this to avoid shitty "oh no suddenly I got cancer for no reason!" fics

although I have heard that there is a completely different system for this type of warning

I don't read fics I just think that trope is stupid.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right?

I don't see any justification for getting super-upset over failure to warn for things that you could easily encounter unsolicited in your daily life. In real life, cancer is not avoidable the way graphic depictions of rape or abuse are. You could be sitting next to a rape survivor on the bus and have absolutely no idea and you will not be triggered by that survivor's mere presence. If you are triggered by seeing someone who appears to be going through chemotherapy, well... tough? It's not that person's fault they have cancer or that you are having an emotional reaction over it. What are cancer patients and survivors supposed to do? Hide themselves away at home for fear of making other people upset? Hire a kid to run ahead with an air horn, warning others that a cancer patient is approaching?

Also, warning for canon and in-character things is ridiculous. It's not the author's fault you aren't familiar with the canon.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have ever seen anyone say that rape survivors, cancer surivors/sufferers, trigger them, or that it the survivor's fault.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
How can someone be triggered by the thought of cancer but not by meeting people whom they know have cancer? Meeting those people would make you think about cancer.
