*g* Yeah, there were enough carrotshints at the Doctor's past to make me curious. For now Wikipedia and other sites are still enough to fill the gaps, though. Especially as I've been told that quite a lot of the older episodes got deleted and aren't available any more. :(

Ah, thank you. It's still sad, though.

They're not available in video form, but audio recordings of every episode still exist, at least. Old-school fans used to sit by their TVs with tape recorders to record the audio, and thanks to them we've got at least that much from every single Doctor Who serial. :D

Doctor Who's really lucky for that, it's crazy how much culturally significant stuff just had its recordings erased since people at the time couldn't think of any reason people would want to see something they'd already seen before. Like, did you know that until last year, there were literally no known recordings of the first Super Bowl still around? Even not being a football fan, that's still astounding to me. And there's only a handful of episodes of Johnny Carson's first ten years or so still around because NBC kept reusing the same tapes to record them, that's hundreds of shows lost forever. Jack Paar's entire run before him is basically completely gone too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiping has a lot more information on it, I can't believe how much stuff is just gone forever. The biggest one for me is that 99% of the DuMont Television Network's entire run over its entire span of existence is gone because a later broadcast network dumped the tape warehouse into the East River to clear out space.
