Once you see people arguing that incest triggers need to be added to non-incest pairings, warning for ableism won't seem like such a big deal.

Idk, it doesn't have to be under a trigger warning or in the header. Most fics I see have at least warnings or heads-up of what the fic will contain. I mean, I wanna know what kinda fic I'm reading even if I won't be triggered by anything.

Though I'm curious of what the common opinion on writing x-ist characters is. Do they need trigger warnings if anyone who knows the series would know of their prejudiced behavior? Saying that they're in the fic and play a major role could be a warning in itself.

Wait, what? I haven't seen that but wow.

I don't know, but I wouldn't even be sure WHAT to warn for, considering that if one were to write dialogue in which people talk like ordinary people ("that's crazy," "don't be stupid," "lame!" etc.), then some in fandom would consider it horribly ableist.

I find that language offensive, but I take no issue with people writing that kind of dialogue if it makes sense for the character to speak that way. There's a difference between writing about something and having your fic express agreement with it.

I'm Jewish, but I don't get offended if someone writes about a character who's canonically a Nazi.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably depends how much the x-ist behavior shows up. Take the Red Skull. There are canon storylines where his Nazi beliefs are barely mentioned, and there are storylines where every other thing that comes out of his mouth is racist. If I were writing a story where the racism doesn't come up much I wouldn't warn, but if I were writing one where he is plotting genocide, I would.

This. If a fic is otherwise good, I'm willing to just go "blechh" and keep on reading if a character says a few ableist things in a kind of offhand way, but I've stumbled into a few fics where the bigotry was really profound or pervasive that I really wish I could've known to avoid.

I'd say that's partially dependent on where and in what context you're posting- it's one thing to note in your header that so-and-so plays a major role in the fic if you're posting to a fandom-specific archive, but if you're writing crossover, contributing to a 'fest, or are otherwise likely to get a fair amount of readers who may not be familiar with the canon, it may be courteous in some circumstances to give newcomers a heads-up.

I recently posted a fic that had a very closed POV of two characters who used a lot of misogynistic and homophobic language despite both being gay and one being a woman. In the content notes I put internalized homophobia & misogyny, not because *trigger* but because I didn't want to get jumped on by people who would read it and attempt to educate me on how terrible their POVs were. I know, but it's also IC. A lot of warnings (like what I did) are simply trying to avoid a dogpile, and this is pushback against having to do that at all for anything outside the "big four".
