Reminds me of when I would read "warning: yaoi/gay" for fic featuring slash pairings.

Those always get a snigger from me.

I don't think those are so much actual warnings, as a vaguely subtle way of going 'p.s. hella guys snogging in this fic, all kinds of BL, just saying'.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not so much nowadays, since the "you don't warn for het, so warning for slash is homophobic" attitude is becoming more widespread, but a lot of older fic does have great big "DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER!!! SLASH AHEAD!!!! IF YOU DON'T LIKE BOYS KISSING HIT THE BACK BUTTON NOW OR BE SCARRED FOR LIFE!!!!" warnings on it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, in my fandom at least, het IS warned for. As is slash, and femmeslash. It's usually made clear what genders are getting it on, and warnings are generally provided for every one, so that's nice. (It did make me giggle at first to see warning: HET, but I'm grateful for it now.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's actually a fandom evolution thing. When the Internet started, people weren't expecting to run into slash, so you warned even if the pairing made it plain as day. Now it's become homophobic to warn (which is bad for older fics or people who just haven't gotten with the times). I don't see it as any harm done, since it's pretty obviously not meant to be homophobic.

So it's not cool to warn for slash, but everything else up to and including fluffy pink bunnies, MUST be warned for. Fandom's SJ Warriors are really fucking stupid sometimes.

I find it funny that I've never come across those types of warnings, but I get WARNING HET all the time. I guess it's 'cause my fandoms are all primarily slash anyways, so het is the rare and unusual ~danger~.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yes, in my fandom, it's primarily slash, so there might be a 'slash' in there somewhere, but if it's het it will be like 'okay, this is het. DON'T TURN AWAY, GIVE IT A CHANCE, I SWEAR IT'S GOOD.' Or 'BRIEF HET SCENE THEN THE HOT MAN LOVING. THERE'S HET BUT I PROMISE IT'S BRIEF.' Lol.

LOL exactly; I see the second one a lot. I don't mind warnings or anything, but it's funny to me that people have to warn(for these things).

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the second one too.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can just imagine some outraged reviewer screaming "Nobody told me this John/Bob fic would contain HOMOSEXUALITY!"

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Believe it or not, that did happen. I'm talking about back when ALL slash fic was rated NC-17 because it was slash - even the fic which alluded to a kiss and nothing more.

I've seen people yelled at for including those - but then, I've also seen people yelled at for NOT including those, so. There's really no way to win, it seems.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, wouldn't things like classifying the fic under "slash" or "Pairing: gender character/same gender character" already be a warning of sorts for gay stuff? Are these authors whipping out same-sex pairings out of nowhere?
