So... who exactly does it hurt to be "too liberal" with trigger warnings?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
generally if it's got warnings for this, that, and the other thing, i already can't take it seriously and move on.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Because if you need to know every damn thing the story contains just read the fucking story.

Because it's making people so sensitive that they can't handle anything. I've mentioned it elsewere, but I've seen people fight for their right to be triggered by incest over a non-incestuous pairing, and people who felt a wall of text with the single use of the word 'derp' needed to be warned for ableism, and I've seen a post about a website get tagged as a trigger because...some of the people in the forums were jerks(I'm not talking about 4chan either).

Trigger warnings are important and people have the right to have some control of their fandom experiences, but some people need to grow a thicker skin because I can't imagine how miserable their fandom life must be if the things I mentioned above can emotionally wreck them.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm wondering how these people would react if they got dropped into 4chan.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I've long thought it would be hilarious if we took a bunch of /b/tards and locked them in a room with a bunch of SJWs. Within 30 seconds the SJWs would be tiny panicked balls of SJW, and the /b/tards would be having the time of their lives.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Because people then get mad at authors who don't include warnings.

Basic concepts of reasonable expectation and self-responsibility in a hobby where you write things for people for free.

How does fic being free matter? I can get books from the library for free and watch TV over the air for free. The latter comes with very limited warnings and the former have no warnings whatsoever.

It's also much easier to voluntarily spoiler yourself for most mass media than it is for fic, especially when some fan authors specifically cite spoilers as their reason not to warn. It's a valid decision, but it does make it a lot harder to be proactive about avoiding things.

Well, for starters, all the people who've lived experiences that get listed as triggers are now upset and feel like they're being talked down too or needlessly sheltered like poor, fragile woobies. It also hurts the fandom in general because it's supporting a culture of thinking of someone as their trauma/disability/race/orientation first. So you get a lot of non-oppressed people running around and being verbally abusive to authors who don't have every trigger ever listed on their fic and suddenly the people who do deal with these issues every day get drowned out and ignored in favour of the invisible people who desperately need all these trigger warnings to survive a day in fandom.
