Raising someone and guiding them to fall in love with you does kind of count as manipulation, though. :\ She has a choice later on, but it's all about early exposure.

He's being manipulated by his "primal nature," but that doesn't make it "right."

I agree that it is creepy of Meyer to have written it like that, Jake on the other hand, is not (consciously, at least) wanting her to fall in love with him. It is impossible of him to want her to fall in love with him unless she does.

The buckets of fail here are really Meyer's own attitudes. She apparently believes that creepy, obsessive, unconditional love is something to aspire to.

Basically, I don't think there's anything wrong with the concept itself, as it is in universe, because it's not romantic or sexual unless the imprintee wants it to be. Out of universe on the other hand, is immensely creepy and awful, because Meyer supports the idea of ALL imprintees falling in love. If there were in canon examples of an imprinting ending up platonic I'd be a lot happier.

I would love an imprint/imprintee relationship that was platonic, that'd be great. Actually, there's that between Jacob and, er, apparently she's biologically Renesmee but her name is Elspeth in an AU fic I've read called Radiance (sequel to a Twilight re-do called Luminosity). They're more like platonic life partners and Jacob says at one point he can't even really think about romance with her.

Their dynamic's brilliant there, I love the two of them in it. Also Jacob never having been into her mother helps.

All of this. Yeah, it's creepy and gross as fuck for Meyer to have written that, but Jacob isn't responsible for it. He's basically under a love spell.
