So ableism is discrimination against people based on disabilities (whether physical or psychological.)

I don't know if you were trying to, but that came off like you thought it was obvious. It's not. It's a neologism using a non-religious, English word as the root, which, since most other terms using -ism are of Greek or Latin origin, is not the norm. It would be logical to assume able here is some Greek or Latin root. Since it's not (although able does come from a Latin word), it's not something easy to guess.
