AYRT

Yeah, that does suck. I have paranoid personality disorder, and if I had a quarter for every time I had to explain to people that it doesn't mean I have more than one personality or that I hear voices and think aliens are eating my brain (my delusions tend to be more along the lines of "everyone is out to get me/the government is plotting against me/holy shit everyone is in on this!" ), or that no, I'm not going to shoot up my college campus, I'd be fucking Bill Gates.

But by the same token, it really bugs me when people walk on eggshells around me as to not offend me because they think if they say the wrong thing I'm going to go berserk. What I meant by my comment was more along the lines of people treating me like delicate little snowflake that might suddenly hulk out and turn into nuclear fallout- taking care to make sure that they NEVER, EVER refer to anything as crazy, apologize profusely if someone says something that could be a bit snarky, constantly ask me if I need help with anything on days when I need to use my cane... that kind of thing. I once had an acquaintance nearly shit herself because she mentioned she was reading a book about the BTK killer and I was present. It was kind of like, "you really think I'm going to be offended by that? I think I'm more offended that you think mentioning a book you're reading is going to make me get my murder on."

Of course people shouldn't use bipolar as a catchall term for whatever mental illness, and I apologize if that's what it came across as though I was criticizing.

This. This is why trigger warnings aggravate me. Ableism isn't good, but between people saying "crazy" and being denied a high stress job because I am medically disqualified regardless of how the disorder affects me I'll take crazy. It isn't like this is something I had once and I'm going to get over. I'm stuck with it. How are you going to trigger me with something I take medication for every day? I'm kind of aware of it.

I don't know if that makes sense. I mean, I want warnings for eating disorders and self harm, which are also diseases. But the struggle there is something you can get over. That's what I think a trigger is: something that reminds you of something bad that happened. Mental disease isn't really something you get over. You can manage it, but you can't make it disappear.
