(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 03:51 am (UTC)(link)The movie makers like it, I suppose, because it helps cover up cheaply made scenes.
For example, in a horror movie, if the camera is shaky when a monster attacks, it never lets the audience see how shoddily made the puppet is or how terrible the special effects were.
It's also very used in action scenes so that they don't have to spend so much time and effort rehearsing the choreography to make it look realistic or to pay skilled stunts to do the scene. I bet that if those scenes were filmed and played normally, the would look hilariously absurd and faked.
There are probably legitimate uses for it, but I don't recall ever seeing them, nor would I really want to.
tl;dr:It's just a cheap "technique" to not put as much effort, money and/or time into some scenes.
