If she wasn't trying for subtlety, why not just go up to Coin and murder her? Why go through all of this elaborate secret planning that could go very wrong in order to murder Coin when she had many other chances to do it? Are you suggesting that Johanna and Haymitch were in on it too through the powers of telepathy? Like, what a coincidence that Coin suggested that, or else she never would have been able to do it, then.

It just doesn't make any sense. I think you guys are trying really hard to explain away all of Katniss' many flaws.

Like, what a coincidence that Coin suggested that, or else she never would have been able to do it, then.

I don't think Katniss had any intention whatsoever of killing Coin UNTIL she suggested a Capitol-children-only Hunger Games. It was a split second realization that Coin was just as dangerous and corrupt as Snow, and also that this person had no qualms about killing children and was almost assuredly behind the attack that killed Prim. And Haymitch would've picked up on it, too, because he and Katniss were established in all three books to be on the same page in their thinking. Johanna and Enobaria I doubt were in on it. They probably meant it when they voted for it. Both were a lot more blatantly ruthless than Katniss ever was. As for why not go up to Coin and murder her, it had to be public just like Snow's was supposed to be public, because otherwise what's the point?

As for below about Katniss being straightforward and blunt, this is the same person who came up with a double-suicide plan at a moment's notice to force the Capitol to save both her and Peeta. Katniss is not incapable of strategy, or spur-of-the-moment action. I agree she's a flawed character, but I also think she had a pretty good grasp of what was going on.

I don't think Katniss had any intention of killing Coin until seconds before she actually did it, upon realizing how dangerous and corrupt she was. I just don't think this was some huge plot on the part of Katniss to kill Coin or something like that. So many little coincidental things had to happen in order for her just to have ONE chance at killing Coin. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I think she voted in favor of the final Hunger Games out of grief and feelings of revenge, and then realized at the last second that putting children through that kind of pain was a) not going to fix anything, b) exactly what the Capitol does, and c) a chilling reflection on Coin's character.

This is kind of how I saw it too. I really didn't think it was "obvious" that Katniss was setting up some elaborate plan when she made her decision. It sounded very much to me like she really wanted revenge.

Yeah, I completely agree. That's how I read it, too.

+1 to all of this.

I adore you and the way you think. Seriously. This is all completely spot on.

Haymitch yes, Johanna no. Johanna genuinely wanted revenge. But it was clear that Haymitch and Katniss were in silent agreement. It had been established many times before that they thought alike. And when did Katniss ever have a chance to kill Coin previously? I mean, post war when she saw that Coin would be just as bad as Snow?

So much of this can be figured out if you just pay attention to the characterisation through the series. It's not subtle and it's not open to interpretation. It's the clear and obvious reading of the text.

Yes, it is clearly established that Haymitch and Katniss thought alike and were good at communicating nonverbally. But don't you think it's a pretty elaborate plan that would have had to be communicated through eye signals? "Sup Haymitch, so actually do you think you could vote with me so that I can have a chance at assassinating Coin?". What they're "planning" IS up to interpretation.
