I wrote a fic where the character died at the end. I labeled it as "angst" and "drama".

I did not add any warnings, because even though the option was there on AO3, it would completely ruin the surprise of the story and you wouldn't be shocked by it. I argued with myself for about an hour, and then decided not to label it because of that reason.

I got a comment that basically said "OH MY GOD YOU NEED TO ADD A CHARACTER DEATH WARNING SERIOUSLY THAT'S UPSETTING" and I was furious. I'm not your fucking babysitter. You don't like it? Tough. I want to make you feel emotion. Triggered by it? Sorry. I can't help you though. Sometimes you see things you don't like online.

I find warning for character death particularly ridiculous since essentially 90% of the books I was required to read from elementary to high school involved someone dying. (And in high school I was required to read books that involved even darker themes such as child abuse (physical and sexual), rape (implicit and explicit), incest, suicide, torture, psychological abuse, etc. We never got warnings or anything like that).

And character death isn't triggery. I consider triggery things to, you know, be horrible stuff that should never happen to someone. Everyone freaking dies. People need to understand this.

Ugh same. I delayed posting for a day or two just so I coukd decide whether to warn for it or not. I eventually decided against it because hey, THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE STORY. It was supposed to catch you off guard.
The very first comment was from a writer that, up until then, I had very much respected and enjoyed her work. She bitched me out for not putting a warning. Now I can't even read her work anymore because I just think of how stupid that was :/

For that, I'm pretty sure you need to click "choose not to warn" according to the archive rules. Character death can pretty thoroughly ruin someone's day depending on their experience and how you killed the character off.

It's *character death*, not slurs or spiders. You're just being a dick.

Character death can pretty thoroughly ruin someone's day depending on their experience and how you killed the character off.

I'm not the anon who did this, but so what? I swear to God, I don't go out of my way to read sad books, but I feel like in over half the books that I read that an important character dies. What are you guys reading? Care Bears?

Character death is not triggery because everyone eventually dies. Therefore, it does not need to be warned for.

I find this attitude weird. Why do you read? What's the point of reading if you don't end up feeling any emotion other than happiness? What's the point? I believe there are some people who genuinely get triggered, but I think most of people who claim to be triggered by stuff are just feeling bleak or sad. Just...it's sad. Thank god there are options that make seeing/not seeing warnings/triggers available.
